Résumé

This report summarizes the findings in recent literature regarding LTD concepts useful for the coach education curriculum. A summary of the main findings is as follows:

  • LTD is generally well received by coaches; most find they have values in common with those related to LTD.
  • Many comments were issued regarding the relation between the stages of development and technical skills training. In many studies coaches questioned their ability to discern if a technique was appropriate or not for a given stage
  • Some articles mentioned a positive link between good outcomes and the adoption and implementation of LTD at the club level.
  • Larger clubs with one or more experienced head coaches seem to have a more favourable organizational environment for consistently applying LTD in their functioning.
  • Although most stakeholders favour Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD), the sport system continues to reward short-term winning, which does not align with LTD principles.

The conclusions are followed by recommendations for programs and suggestions for future research.
