JANUARY 23, 2018 – The Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) is proud to launch an updated version of the popular National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) workshop, Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS).
Now presented by TeamSnap, the FMS workshop is designed for coaches, educators, and recreation leaders to help them guide the physical development of children.
Fundamental movement skills are the building blocks of movement. They can occur in and on different environments: air, water, ice and land. The NCCP Fundamental Movement Skills Workshop, presented by TeamSnap, focuses on seven specific on-land fundamental movement skills including: throwing, catching, jumping, striking, running, kicking, and – new in this update – wheeling.
These skills allow children to enjoy sports and physical activities. Most importantly, with a firm grasp of the fundamental movement skills, a child may enjoy a long life of physical activity.
“In this workshop, the coach or leader will learn how to help develop the building blocks of movement to support the competence, confidence, and motivation of children to try many physical activities,” explains the Coaching Association of Canada’s CEO, Lorraine Lafrenière. “And that can help lead to a life-long desire to play sports and remain active.”
The updated module offers a simplified teaching process for coaches to observe, detect and correct the fundamental movement skills. Its re-launch comes thanks to the support of TeamSnap.
Founded in 2009 and headquartered in Boulder, Colo., TeamSnap has taken the organization of youth, recreational and competitive sports into the 21st century. 15 million coaches, administrators, players and parents use TeamSnap’s web and smartphone apps to sign up, schedule, communicate and coordinate everything for the team, the club and the season. “We live and breathe sports,” says TeamSnap Chief Growth Officer Ken McDonald. “So we know it’s important to learn the skills necessary to play sports and be physically active. The Fundamental Movement Skills Workshop provides our sports leaders the opportunity to help kids gain that confidence in physical activity. We couldn’t be more proud to partner with the CAC and help support that concept.”
Workshop Learning Outcomes
The 4.5-hour, interactive, in-person workshop is open to all participants – it’s no longer offered in separate workshop formats for parents, coaches, teachers, and recreation leaders.
The module provides tools, templates, and games/activities to help coaches and leaders implement practices and sessions to develop the fundamental movement skills.
When participants complete the workshop, they will gain the ability to:
- Detect and correct basic errors for fundamental movement skills in participants so they have a choice to adopt a healthy, active lifestyle;
- Apply a teaching process to promote the development of fundamental movement skills;
- Adapt fundamental movement skills for participants with intellectual, physical, sensory or behavioural disabilities;
- Lead activities that will promote the development of fundamental movement skills in a safe, responsible manner while interacting with others, and;
- Provide stage-appropriate feedback to encourage and develop fundamental movement skills in participants.
