An Assessment of the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) “Make Ethical Decisions”(MED) Online Evaluation

Original report written by: Stirling, A., Kerr, G. & Banwell, J. (n.d).

Summary

Ethical issues are very much a contemporary concern for coaches and the developing coaching profession more broadly (Cassidy, Jones, & Potrac, 2004; Lyle, 2002). A priority of the Coaching Association of Canada and NCCP has been educating coaches on the NCCP’s coaching code of ethics, ethical decision-making and safety in sport. To be certified in any NCCP program, a coach must complete the MED online evaluation.

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the NCCP MED online evaluation tool.

Specifically, the objectives of this research were to:

  • Examine coaches’ perspectives on the strengths and weaknesses of the online evaluation
  • Explore the perceived influence of coaches’ previous experiences, training and education on their ability to complete the MED online evaluation
  • Critically evaluate the content of the evaluation with respect to the aspects of coaching competencies being assessed.

This project involved three distinct phases: Phase I (Survey), Phase II (Semi-structure interviews) and Phase III (Content analysis).

Strengths and weaknesses of the MED evaluation are presented with recommendations for improvements.
