Two Gender Equity Initiatives Support Women in High-Performance Coaching

SwimCAN chose to be proactive in creating opportunities for women coaches to succeed at the highest levels of the sport. Of interest to authors Siobhan Rourke, Carol Cárdenas-Castro, and Diane Culver was the impact of two of its initiatives – the Budapest Experience and the ongoing Select Coaches program, launched in 2013 – in transforming an environment that has long been male dominated.

Coaching Mothers in Canadian Sport: Cultural Realities and Paths Forward

Adding an important new dimension to the discussion, Jill examines the particular situation of coaching mothers. Building on the Journal’s body of literature, she paints a disturbing picture of coaching mothers continuing to be constrained by “powerful assumptions” about ‘good motherhood.’ Her solution: … “small, actionable steps that can move culture forward without waiting for budgets, policies, or systems to be rebuilt.”

Some Good News: Women Coaches as Coach Developers in the NCCP

“Since 1974, more than two million coaches and coach developers (CDs) have been trained through the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) to develop their coaching skills and improve the performance of their athletes and participants at all levels of sport.” Most Canadians are familiar with the role of the coach; few are aware of the CD role and its potential to contribute to a robust sport system. The authors build a compelling case for women (and others) to consider CD training as a viable option to rewarding and meaningful involvement through the NCCP. – Sheila Robertson, Journal Editor.
