Game Changer: Gary Durrant

January 17, 2013

Gary Durrant was born in Kingston, Jamaica and immigrated to Canada at the age of 13. While attending Florida Atlantic University on a full scholarship, Durrant became, and still remains, the only Canadian to win the NCAA Slam Dunk competition. Durrant graduated from University with degrees in Sociology and Exercise Science and later moved to play Pro Basketball in Europe. During his years in Europe, he lived in Greece, England, and Italy where he taught English in local schools.

When he ended his Pro Basketball career, Durrant returned to Canada to teach youth in the local community. He also started his own non-profit organization called the Gary Durrant Basketball Association which gives back to the community by providing youth from across Ontario with a safe place to learn fundamentals for basketball and for life. His organization also provides youth with free tutoring, mentoring, assistance finding scholarships, employment, clothes, short-term housing and financial assistance where possible.

Gary Durrant is currently the President of Operations for the Oshawa Power of the newly formed professional basketball league in Canada. Using his experience as a player, coach, and business entrepreneur, Durrant has the responsibility of building a professional team, developing players, and creating excitement on and off the court.

Now, after years of teaching on and off the court, he has emerged as a leader in the field of personal development and the achievement of excellence by providing leadership to individuals, teams, organizations, corporate professionals, and communities at-large. Inspiring, compelling and down-right enlightening, Durrant lives his message; he knows the value of leadership, hard work, volunteerism and community involvement, and he is committed to sharing these views as an active role model in his community.
