Promoting Safety in Sport through the CAC’s Understanding the Rule of Two eLearning Module

April 6, 2022

Free eLearning module explains a key pillar of the Responsible Coaching Movement

The Coaching Association of Canada has launched a new eLearning module, Understanding the Rule of Two. The Rule of Two is a leading practice for sport organizations to implement to help foster a safe environment for all.

The goal of the Rule of Two is to ensure all interactions and communications are open, observable and justifiable. It is one of three pillars of the Responsible Coaching Movement, along with background screening and ethics training.

After completing the Understanding the Rule of Two eLearning module, participants will:

  • Have a solid understanding of the Rule of Two
  • Improve their ability to assess and implement preventive measures
  • Be aware of questions to ask to determine their sport organization’s policies

"The Understanding the Rule of Two eLearning module allows all within our sport system to further develop their knowledge of this leading safe sport practice and how best to implement to protect participants and coaches. This module supports a crucial pillar of the Responsible Coaching Movement in Canada and provides a foundation for coaches, participants, parents, and volunteers, to continuously ensure a safe sport environment for all." - Lorraine Lafrenière, Chief Executive Officer, Coaching Association of Canada.

Applying the Rule of Two in sport environments provides many benefits, including:

  • Increasing the safety and security of all participants
  • Reducing the risk of an incident of abuse
  • Protecting everyone, including coaches and volunteers
  • Reducing a sport organization's liability
  • Providing additional help if there’s an accident or emergency

The CAC’s Understanding the Rule of Two eLearning module is available free through its online learning platform, the Locker. It is offered in English and French, takes 20 minutes to complete, and meets accessibility guidelines.

Coaches certified through the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) can also earn 1 Professional Development point upon completing the eLearning module.
